This month, we’re featuring Ming Pao from Hong Kong!
Firstly established as a Chinese newspaper in the 1950s, their web version Ming Pao.com came to birth during the online boom during the 1990s. After many years, they’re still going strong and have expanded into overseas branches and established themselves as being one of the most visited news portals in Hong Kong. We were fortunate to get together with Mingpao.com’s Business Director, Henry Yeung to talk about the successful news portal.

1) Can you tell us a little about how Mingpao.com got started?
Mingpao.com started running since 1995, catering to the online boom during that period and also to offer our readers one more channel to read the latest content through a website. We were also the first websites amongst all of the media in Hong Kong to launch a free e-newsletter service to deliver breaking news to our subscribers. This service has lasted till now, and we are still the only Hong Kong media that provides such services to the community.
2) How are you different from the other news sites out there?
Mingpao is unique because we emphasize on reporting impartial news and the truths. Our editorial teams have been insisting on remaining a neutral stance in any news that we report, and this is unchanged for over 50 years.
3) What are the main challenges faced by you in this highly dynamic online media ecosystem?
The fact that digital trends are rapidly changing. And as a response, we are constantly launching new & various digital channels on web and apps to meet market needs. These new features have increased users consumption and stickiness to our web products by providining interesting experiences in the digital world.
4) What’s your best tip to the new publishers out there?
Folks in the press business need to have a sense of the enthusiasm as well as dedication to what they’re doing. For investors, if the objective is just to make money, there’s no point to invest in press, there are other more profitable investments besides a publishing house.
5) What role does Innity play in your business and how has it helped?
Innity and Mingpao.com have been collaborating since 2012. Innity provides rich ad format to as well as innovative technologies support to us, and it is our honor to have Innity as media collaborators. We believe our relationship will get closer through future deployments.
Mingpao.com doesn’t have a mascot, but the character “Ming” in Chinese represents integrity and honor, so it should be something that reflects that.
